If you want to stick to other interpolation-based methods also consider using the interpolation Tools set by ESRI ArcGIS.

An interesting example of fairly basic GIS techniques. Assuming that for each datum you have lat/long data there are a number of ways to first establish areas of intensity and then do do a density analysis. Point density is one way. You might also consider a density mapping as well. This would allow you to identify hot spots, regions of more intense activity, and then examine them individually. I assume you may have data on the nature of the the Gibbon’s sounds ... intensity or specificities of utterance. I’d prhaps use a density map to identify the areas where you would then be able to examine the prevalence of this or that actual utterance.

Thanks for your responses. To be a bit more specific, I have raw data from gibbon population surveys which consist of bearing and distance estimates from multiple arrays of sets of three listening posts. I have the coordinates of all the listening post arrays, which I have projected into GIS. However, I do not have the coordinates of the gibbon groups, I only have the bearing and distance estimates from each listening post.

I need to estimate the number of gibbon groups by using the bearing and distance estimates from all three listening posts to determine where the bearing and distance estimates intercept. Is there a GIS tool or method which can do this?
