In groundwater studies, the trend surface modeling can be used to determine the groundwater flow pattern. In a study, the trend surface analysis is performed using the GIS software ILWIS. The groundwater elevation data of the 98 locations have been used in the trend surface analysis to split the groundwater flows into two components, (1) the component associated with the regional trend of groundwater flow and (2) the residual component, the local flows. Polynomial trend surfaces up to the sixth degree are generated. Among the six polynomial trend surfaces, one surface is supposed to be the statistically most significant. What are the statistical parameters - to be considered to examine the best fit surface (goodness of fit)? Can someone explain with example? Is there any software to examine the same?
