Please assist me with an approach or framework for applying time series trend analysis on a river discharge for a very weird river. The river has alternating phases or flowing and zero flows. i.e can flow for 40years, dry for 30years, flow again for 30 years, dry again for 20 (dry I mean literally zero flows.
This is all in annual temporal scales. Do I split the time series into sections when the river was flowing Or trend analysis does not apply to such data if I want to a trend for the complete series?

A framework for intermittent rivers need to link hydrological trend with climatic data as temperature, precipitation and aridity to interpret zero flows in terms of hydrological - climate relationship. Time of zero flow give rise climatic time series in search of explanations. Alternating between both types of time series may be useful.
Thank you all very much. I am still to further understand this. i.e. the river is strictly fed by an outflow of a water body. The river 'catchment on its own does not contribute to river flow as it has considerably flat and very porous sediments cover (like there is no rainfall-runoff process, all rainfall infiltrates unless in very high intensity rainds). So even a river flow relationship to the flow would be more realistic when associated with rainfall at the headwaters region, probably with lag time. Back to trend analysis, is it applicable to time series with a significant number of consecutive zero values. e.g 10 consecutive years of zero in in the middle of a time series of 50 years ?

Because zero values represent a consecuence into river ecosystem, you must consider them in your analysis using methods like sparse data analysis used in other disciplines. Clasical trend analysis may be not applicable to the complex system that is your river.
