Very nice question. Traditional farming system has provided all the necessary clues for modern day agriculture, traditional system of farming would never be a hurdle to modernise present day agriculture. Somewhere qe can find solution to present day climate change related issue. The onset of concepts like natural farming , organic farming, conservation agriculture all have overlappung objectives and stemmed from traditional concepts of agriculture only....

It needs a combinatioin of good agricultural practices of traditional farming systems such as use of organics and modern technologies such as soil and water conservation, crop rotations, use of stress tolerant crops and varieties.

Personally, I learned a lot from the peasants who lived on the land where I grew up as much, if not more, from what I learned on the school benches. And I'm going to tell you about two of these lessons:

Lesson 1- On the adaptation of Tunisian olive groves to bioclimatic conditions:

The olive tree has been cultivated in Tunisia since Roman times under different bioclimatic conditions in exclusively rainfed groves: in the south with less than 250 mm of rainfall and in the north with more than 600 mm [1]. Apart from the different olive tree species in each of the regions, it is clear that the density of olive trees is strictly correlated with rainfall, ranging from 16 olive trees per hectare in the South to nearly a hundred olive trees per hectare in the North; so that it is possible to faithfully superimpose the density map of olive trees on the map of isohyets. Empirically, over millennia and outside of any protocol or procedure, the peasants have naturally adapted to the natural conditions of the environment and it is difficult to imagine that things can be otherwise.

Lesson 2- On floods and hydraulic disorders:

Indigenous, Carthaginian, Roman, and Muslim cities were, without exception, located high up, sheltered from flooding (they were unfortunately not immune to drought). The centrifugal developments of urban agglomerations during the last century have reached flood zones. The transformation of watersheds and the artificialization of the water cycle have increased the concentration of flows so that flooding has become a national plague. It is that contemporary populations, overwhelmed by scientific and technical progress, have not deigned to look back a little?

Mr. Alem Redda, you are right in considering small-scale agriculture as an idealized example of sustainability. That was the case in Hungary in Tanya, the farming system in old times. A complex economy and sustainable production. No pollution, but circular processing of the products. The farmer took care of his farming unit keeping livestock, tilling the fields, growing crops, and even without selling anything on market, he could keep his family in good conditions. But the world had been rearranged toward the cities where a large-scale productive industry gives the life conditions with the transport of energy forms, selling the necessary goods, and requesting the sustainable care of the environment and ecology. It is a hard task to prevent any new disturbance of the balance between the organized life and the new challenges. That is, why we are thinking of the expansion of the cibóvilized life (the city life) to the bottom of the sea, on the shelves, where totally new arrangement of the earlier knowledge is requested. But rearrangement of the knowledge of the sustainable economy is also requested, even if we remain on the surface of the Earth.

Taditional farming implications on climate change , we robustly talk , but hardly see in field practice. Mostly it is anticipation only ..

Going back into traditional farming systems so as to address climate-related challenges is not feasible in the current era, due to rapid increases in demand. An integrated approach that uses external inputs only when unavoidable has gained momentum and that is the way to go. Natural farming, organic farming, sustainable agriculture, climate-smart Agriculture among others, all focus on integrated farming practices that are expected to make our farming 'environment neutral'

I was raising this question before 8 years when one project (SIMLESA) implementation started in the institution that I'm working for. This project was promoting traditional farming system, for example "Zero Tillage" as the best solutions to adapt the threats of climate change, and on the other hand, we were promoting the utilization of modern agricultural technologies to cope the ever growing food demand. So, it was contradicting to me too.

really thank you for sharing my daily headache as a researcher. I have intensively asked farmers in distant villages too. Leave alone us, the farmers said that their traditional farming systems can't fit with the ever-increasing population size in urbans. All world problems are due to excessive population size.

I wonder, some scientists entitling their papers like"

"TRADITIONAL TREATS TO MODERN THREATS".

I think there is something wrong that scientists are understanding smallholder, subsistent farmers.

Climate-change related challenges have been brought about by human activties; the systems in place are now man-made. What is required now is to evolve the systems in such a way that they become 'climate neutral'. The evolution of the systems is in a predominant forward direction, not reverse. This is exactly what climate-smart technologies/innovations is all about. There is no way we can go back to the traditional systems that could not provide adequately for a growing population, but rather it is about evolving the systems forward.

Let's for a moment leave this climate-septic versus climate alarmist quarrel, that we're not going to resolve now, and let's, as non-climato-septic, consider that the increase in global temperature is 1.5 °C over a century.

So what?

What are general environmental goals in tackling Climate Change? What should be done? Where? When? In which order? on whom should we place responsibility in Green-House-Effect? who shall pay, if any? And correlatively: what are in general global environmental issues priorities in ensuring better sustainability and better future for the earth?

But I have a big worry. The indigenous practices (kn/de) mean and were so effective where there were relatively fewer people on Earth with relatively fertile soil (including the possibility of fallowing), no such fast urbanization, less rural to urban migration, etc. But nowadays things have changed beyond our imagination:

The question is how can we feed these 10 billion people on Earth with indigenous kn/de (IK)?

Where IK means:

• little or no use of agrochemicals (but >50% of the food on Earth is due to fertilizers)
• No use of fossil fuels (developed countries use more than enough)
• No such huge factories (causes of GHGs)
• No deforestation for farming
• No total fishing of oceans/seas and lakes
• No extreme irrigation (b/se it is borrowing water from the coming generations)
• No cruel animal slaughtering (in big cities)
• No mental spoilage (corruption, gang, rape, etc.)

"Mother Earth has Enough for the needy but not for the greedy"

I think the cause of all problems on Earth is due to population increase.

Not only the size but also the unlimited demand of humans for the limited sources.

How can we deal with the ever-increasing population issue?

Not all traditional systems are comparable, there are undoubtedly more efficient systems than others. It depends from what point of view we evaluate them. But in general, the incides on energy efficiency, biomass replacement, agrobiodiversity use, ecosystem stability are undoubtedly better in traditional systems. from a yield point of view, modern agriculture is often superior. What makes it even more difficult are modern systems such as "pressure farming" that do less damage to the environment and high yields are obtained. In short, traditional systems can be improved, and be true solutions for climate change; precision agriculture can also become "greener" and make a good contribution to the climate crisis.
