The 2012 ACI report have tackled the torsion of structural concrete. But did not approach either of the following:
- Steel fiber concrete.
-Lightweight concrete.
-High strength concrete.
-FRP reinforced concrete.
Most of the current studies are focused on shear and punching shear. Is the torsion design clear already or we are just postponing it till shear is cleared?
In my opinion Torsion of Concrete Beams, especially when related to structural reinforcing via Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymers (GFRP), Basalt Reinforced Polymers (BFRP), Carbon Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) and other Innovative Materials will still require broader research, development and adaptation in the Codes and Standards. Typically, the consideration of only "pure" torsion is more of an idealized laboratory exercise, since in Buildings and Structures alike Torsion will always act in combination with Shear Force, among others. Consideration is typically given to the implementation of equal inclination angles of the structural element's struts, which is more of a "safety" consideration when analyzing the combination of Torsion and Shear Force. As mentioned, FRP Reinforced Concrete, High-Strength Concrete, Steel-fiber Reinforced Concrete and also Light-weight Concrete do deserve further consideration with respect to Torsional Loading and Combination Effects of Torsion and Shear Forces, among others. Hopefully, Code and Standards updates will consider these in the near future.
I do agree with you dr Christian C. Steputat and I partially agree with you Okoye Chrisantus . Shear comes first and then punching shear as well as torsion. However, investigations should not wait. We should have some concurrent work to keep up.
