ZnO-Ag nanocomposites have been considered as highly-effective photocatalyst to degrade organic pollutant. To what extent (especially, particle size and crystalline structure of Ag), do Ag nanoparticles improve the photocatalytic activity of ZnO-Ag nanocomposites?

Can improve the photocatalytic activity of ZnO-Ag nanocomposites. Nanometre-sized Ag-ZnO (8 atomic % weight of Ag) was synthesized by photoreduction of AgNO3 with referring to a procedure described in the literature (Chem. Eng. J. 95, 179–186). That is, Ag+ ions are deposited as Ag metal on the ZnO surface by photoreduction of AgNO3 under UV irradiation (365 nm). One gram of ZnO was added into 250 ml of double distilled water and then irradiated with UV light for 10 minutes to remove any impurities present on ZnO surface. About 8 at % weight of AgNO3 were added into the suspension of ZnO solution and the suspension is adjusted to pH 3.5 by perchloric acid and then irradiated using UV light for 40 minutes with continuous stirring under N2 atmosphere. The suspension was then filtered, washed, dried and then ground to fine powder. For characterization, the dried samples were calcined at temperature (250 0C), with a heating rate of 10 0C min -1 and then maintained for 4 h at the chosen temperature. The specific surface area of as prepared Ag-ZnO is 15m2/g.

The photocatalytic activity in case of ZnO/Ag nanocomposite is improved with respect to particle size as well as the extent of silver present.
