I want to test the chemical composition of Barley straw and Brown Algae biomass. By chemical composition, I mean testing Cellulose, Hemicellulose, and Lignin content in Barley Straw, while testing the protein, carbohydrate, and lipid content in Brown Algae.
Any good and simpler approach to these is highly appreciated.
Please send the relevant supportive information about the methodologies recommended.
First thing : Take a picture of your material.... and freeze it ...
Separate it in fragments :
Determine the water content of some fragments
Homogenize some fragments (blender) and centrifuge them at about 5000g x10 min to separate the water soluble material from the non soluble.
Measure the Nitrogen content in rhe supernatant and in the pellet.
Extract the lipid content with hexane for the supernatant fraction and with ethanol hexane from the pellet fraction. Then you have the basic fractions to work with.... Good luck AR Beaudoin
