I am modeling mat foundation in sap 2000. and I am a bit concerned on the use of line spring elements since they can carry both tension and compression. but, the area spring option allows me to define my springs as compression or tension only. I have modeled using both and the line spring gives higher moment and shear while the area spring yields a lesser value.
so I need clarification on which i should use.
I feel area spring element may be the correct, the reason very simple that soil is continuum in nature..linear spring can predict the response only at the discrete points but area element can predict the response for entire area. so think of it..
I think area springs are correct. In general, you should allow the foundation to uplift (or gapping between soil and foundation) when you're modeling soil and foundation interface. this means that you should utilize elements that have no tension resistance.
