It could also be an order-of-magnitude estimate.
That's the recommended maximum *allowable* level. I am not asking about public health standards, but something different.

I have found As concentrations reported in surface waters that are *really* hard to believe to be real, and so I am trying to find it if they could even be theoretically possible in the first place. Thus my question.

Virendra Kumar Saxena Higher concentrations are more likely found in groundwaters, but any natural water source runs the risk of Arsenic contamination because of it's natural occurrence and previous uses in agricultural processes.
Amy, agreed with you, in ground water As is possible by natural process. But in surface water mostly rain water involved. And water has less time to interact with As rich resources. Analysis indicated less possibility of As in surface water.
Amy, our observational study found least possibilty of As in surface water.
I think it depends on various factors including the geology of the floodplain.

Theoretically no arsenic in surface water. If present should be by contamination process.
