Pyramidal neurons have undergone substantial evolution even from (ancestors of) mice to rhesus monkeys. They are largely the same all over Layer 3 of mouse cortex, but layer 3 rhesus neurons differ significantly both between mouse and rhesus and between different cortical areas of rhesus. This refinement aligns nicely with the observation that pyramidals are apparently the seat of consciousness and of thinking.

"L3 pyramidal neurons plausibly might be considered broadly “generalizable” from one area to another in the mouse neocortex due to their many similarities, but major differences in the properties of these neurons in diverse areas in the rhesus monkey neocortex rules this out in the primate"
