I personally think that two factors play a contributory role in increasing the number of cancer cases. The first one is environmental. Man is exploiting nature in uncanny and thoughtful ways. Second, the materialistic desires of man and his separation from spiritual values increase his level of stress and disrupts the normal operations of the body which gradually leads to cancer.

The medical development makes cancer detection faster than before. This does not mean non-spread/non-proliferation in the past. Genetics play a role, but the development of cases is accompanied by environmental and psychological reactions and different habits. The disease can be controlled by more research in the field of immune system and autoimmunity. Some cancers are caused by things people do or expose themselves to. For example, tobacco use can cause cancer of the lungs, mouth, throat, bladder, kidneys, and many other organs. Of course, not everyone who uses tobacco will get cancer, but it greatly increases a person’s risk. It increases their chance of developing heart and blood vessel disease, too.

Spending a lot of time in the sun without protection can cause skin cancer. Melanoma is a very serious form of skin cancer linked to UV light from the sun and tanning beds.

Radiation can cause cancer. For instance, people exposed to nuclear fallout have a higher cancer risk than those who were not exposed. Sometimes, radiation treatment for one type of cancer can cause another cancer to grow many years later. This is why doctors and dentists use the lowest possible doses of radiation for x-rays and scans (much lower than the doses used for cancer treatment).

Further to my short comment yesterday I like now to give some details on cancer.

1. Risk factors

Smoking

Smoking is perhaps the most clear risk factor (cause) of certain cancers particular cancer of lung and bronchus. It may be the cause of up to 80% of lung cancer. It is also incriminated in cancers of the oral cavity, larynx, oesophagus, stomach, pancreas, kidney and urinary bladder. Smoking may be responsible for 15-30% of cancers affecting humans.

Ionizing radiation

This is a hot issue. Ionizing radiation may be related to a number of cancers like those of blood, lymph nodes, lung, thyroid and others.

Dietary factors

Growing evidence suggest that dietary factors play a significant role in the aetiology of cancer. For example smoked fish is related to stomach cancer, lack of dietary fiber is related to intestinal cancer. Excessive beef consumption is also associated with cancer of large bowel.

Pesticides

When assessing possible cancer risk posed by pesticides, the following factors are considered:

a. The carcinogenic effect (potency) of the chemical, both to human and animals.

b. The potential for human exposure.

c. The intensity and duration of human exposure.

d. Available evidence which is obtained from case reports, ecological

studies, analytical epidemiological studies and any other relevant information.

d. Evidence of lack of a particular route of exposure in humans.

e. Presence of a threshold level which is much higher than the highest anticipated human exposure.

Chemicals

Exposure to chemical agents may be related to occupation or other sources. Chemical agents which are considered carcinogens are benzene, arsenic, cadmium, asbestos and tens others

Infections

Some infections are associated with higher risk of cancer. Examples are schistosomiasis and bladder cancer, hepatitis B and C virus infection and hepatoma, H. pylori and cancer of stomach and AIDES and NHL

Lifestyle changes

Cigarettes smoking as mentioned above, the sedentary life and lack of physical exercise, obesity and the consumption of animal meat and fat are considered as risk factors for certain cancers like colon cancer and other cancers.

Drugs

Cytotoxic drugs themselves may cause leukaemias. Certain hormone preparations are also associated with higher risk of cancer. Hormonal contraceptive use may increase the risk of cancer of the cervix.

Ultraviolet rays

This is associated with some risk of skin cancer and cancers of lymph nodes.

Genetic susceptibility

Some cancers are genetically related cancers like retinoblastoma, leukaemias, Interaction among genetic susceptibility and environmental exposure is complex.

2. Prevention

Despite enormous efforts to improve survival of patients with cancer through various modalities of cancer therapy, successes are still limited. Therefore, prevention should be the main concern. In theory, preventive measures could result in avoiding up to 50% of new cases. Primary prevention of cancer concerns the identification and manipulation of the genetic, biological and environmental factors in the cancer causal pathway. Smoking cessation, diet modification, and chemoprevention are examples of primary preventive activities. Secondary prevention concerns the identification of asymptomatic neoplastic lesions combined with effective therapy. Screening is important tool to help in identification of early cases and hence in effective secondary prevention. It would be useful to further elaborate on certain aspects of preventive measures against cancer.
