Hi Omar, there have been many national mental health surveys. The National Comorbidity Survey in the US ( https://www.hcp.med.harvard.edu/ncs/) was, as far as I know, the first of its kind. It used the World Mental Health Composite International Diagnostic Interview (WHO WMH-CIDI) - see this site for details https://www.hcp.med.harvard.edu/wmhcidi/
The CIDI is very comprehensive, but there are other instruments that measure only common mental health problems such as the CIS-R ( Lewis G, Pelosi AJ, Araya R, et al. Measuring psychiatric disorders in the community: a standardised assessment for use by lay interviewers. Psychological Medicine. 1992;22:465–486)
