There is still restriction on diameter of packed columns especially in petroleum industry because of the nature of the liquids . This is due to the formation of channeling . This can be bypassed by redistribution of flow along the column .

Upto 2mt diameter packed columns can be used above this trays are suitable also where side streams to be withdraw ttays are always suitable there are many other things.
