The mysterious Chinese childhood pneumonia may be caused by mutated respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The rate of mutation in RSV might be increased by overuse of disinfectant spray during COVID-19 pandemic.
Are informed guesses allowed? Already in the West there was huge rebound of infections in aftermath of lifting COVID-19 restrictions. Simply viruses were recovering wasted time and the usual number infections, especially pediatrics ones was compressed into much shorter time frame. I'd expect something like this but amplified in countries that were more diligent during last pandemic. So I could imagine, that China did not have any extraordinary virulent strains at that moment, it was enough to have much bigger immunonaive population than usual to experience a spectacular infection surge.
