Recently I am fabricating PIM-1 based gas membranes using the solvent evaporation method. Instead of forming a complete perfect membrane, it falls into pieces after the solvent (DCM and chloroform) has been evaporated. We have repeated the synthesis of PIM-1 several times but the same phenomena appear from time to time. Did you face the same problem during your experiments of membrane casting with the solvent evaporation method? Do you have any idea on whether this problem comes from the polymer or the membrane casting process?

A student in a research group I worked for reported a similar fact in his master's thesis. He was studying poly(methyl methacrylate) membranes and summarized the best conditions for synthesizing these membranes by assisted evaporation.

It seems that there is aggressive evaporation of the solvent, DCM is a very volatile solvent, its evaporation is very fast. Try to control the evaporation in a slower mode, by drying in a closed environment with saturated DCM vapors.
