It is clear that this pandemic has had a significant influence on social work, in addition to others in the social sphere. But how do you think it will really evolve when normality returns? Will this type of profession be devalued again or will the esteem of the public and of politics in general continue to increase?
I think this is a weird question; as a shrink I had to do all my life with Social Workers and met very competent and engaged ones- and unfortunately some incompetent and lazy -office bound and paper producing ones. I still do value the tasks of SOcial Workers; however I know, that I have to look very carefully with every new face in order to know, into which category they belong- otherwise it is dearly paid by my patients.-
I hope and strongly believe that life will never be the same again even after covid-19 pandemic is over. Lifestyles must change but in my opinion positively.
I think people will prepare themselves for anything similar to the pandemic in the future.
The covid 19 pandemic is spread all over the world. it adds to the agony and stress of the people in every country. Social work profession can interface with counselling and psycho social help overcome the situation and livelihood of the people by suggesting suitable measures such as alternate employment, entrepreneurial development.
The positive impact of Covid 19 on social workers is that it allowed them to work virtually: (a flexible working schedule)enabling them to get more time to learn additional skills to cope with adversity. The negative impact is that some are unemployed due to financial issues, some institutions or organizations had to reduce the number of employees.
Social determinants of health and illness were beginning to achieve increased attention in recent years. In so far as social work initially provided important support to public health concerns in its early years, this has not been the case in recent years. The upshot is the pandemic has magnified the consequences of ignoring social determinants of health in many highly developed societies. It has also revealed the consequences of the digital divide on access to services necessary for preventing illness and access to relevant care.
Clearly, it is likely that the field will experience less esteem if it cannot identify specific solutions to addressing the social contributing and causal factors to health relevant concerns, as well as frameworks for financing the relevant roles played by professional social workers in promoting health and well-being. Societies in the West have been moving away from Welfare State principles to Neo-liberal and other governing philosophies that devote less resources to public health models requiring the strong involvement of social workers. Indeed, technology alone cannot address a number of public health risks emerging from globalization and climate change. There is still an important role for social work in policy and practice, but one requiring significant redesign considerations and adaptations.
