I have added Aluminium chloride (AlCl3) ethanolique to the crude extract of the dates fruit in order to measure the absorption by spectrophotometre .
Instead of the emergence of the yellow color , The mixture had become violet color .
what does that mean ?
It can be caused by complex formation between Aluminium and flavonoid, especially carbonyl and hydroxyl functional group
Addition of Al (Cl)3 to anthocyanin extract, is usually done for anthocyanin identification or characterization. When the color change to violet means it showed bathochromic shift on spectrophotometer, and it contain cyanidin, delphinidin, or petunidin.
Addition the AlCl3to a solution of quercetine give a violet color about at 415 nm. I believe Ashadi Sasongko gives more general solution to this specific question. The aromatic phenol complex formation when the carbonyl group is in the vicinity of gives violet color reaction
