Researches introduce conflicting data about fish meal alternatives in fish feeds especially freshwater fish. Is there an idea, opinion, suggestion or sound knowledge about promising feedstuffs of plant or animal origin to be used as partial alternatives for example in common carp feeds?
Well I don't get what you mean to state by "Conflicting". Most of the animal origin protein is supplemented through the fish meal. It is widely used in South Asian countries for mature fishes in aquaculture sector. Its been traditionally helpful in enhancing the growth in carp culture sector as well as murrels and other catfish industries.No adverse case had been witnessed if not adulterated compositions include prohibited growth promoting anabolic compounds with such protein supplements.

I think tell now no fishmeal alternatives proved successful results concerning fish growth, some say there is a "growth factor" found only in animal protein.
Unconventional feedstuffs may be far future alternatives but need more research until it became useful primary ingredients in fish diet manufacture. I hope foreseeable future you will be one who find fishmeal alternatives.

Dear Dr. Najim,
Common carp is one of main cultured specimen in our country. During recent years the problem of production of fish feed based on local feed ingredients was one of our main research tasks. You know that fish meal is more or less accessible ingredient, however it costs expensive. We have found that most of fish meal in on farm made fish feeds can be substituted with soybean meal. The Feed conversion ration of such feeds in our experiments was enough high for intensive carp culture with about 30-50 kg/m3 productivity.

I appreciate highly your kind response to my question. I agree with your ideas about local alternatives for fish meal. Unfortunately, soybean is not produced in Iraq and soybean meal is mostly imported for poultry feeding. I hope with continuous research we could reach a reasonable solution.

Dear Dr. Najim,
If you have a problem with soybean meal I can suggest you following. Starting from 2012 we have studied the feasibility of using of trash fish as a fish meal substitute in intensive cage culture of common carp and African catfish. In fish catches in our region so-called trash fish having very little market value very often will be utilized as a waste.
The fresh minced trash fish can be added to on farm made fish feeds as fish meal substitute and after air drying used for feeding. Some our farmers having access to trash fish already using this technology and raise carp fingerlings from 25 g to 1200-2000 g within one vegetation season (April-October). However, such feed should be stored in refrigerator or used within a couple of days. Besides that you should conduct feasibility study for using trash fish as a feed ingredient in your country, i.e. it should be profitable and ecologically acceptable.
