chromium is the main culprit of tannery effluents which is attributed due to chromium sulfate salts acts as strong oxidizer and responsible for lowering the pH. However, using chromium hydroxide instead of sulfate may solve the problem at a great extant as it works at neutral pH range.

Cleaner technology or cleaner production could be applied in leather industry to control pollution caused by the industry. By using the cleaner production, we can minimize waste formation, in fact it is possible towards "zero waste".

Chromium is the main cause of water pollution from leather industry. You Should look for Chrome Removal Technologies. One of such plant is in Jajmau, Kanpur which is constructed under GAP
Most of the pollutants generated from leather processing can be eliminated well, using the combination of cleaner technology and end-of-pipe treatment. I think the most difficult problems to solve should be the treatment of Cr(III) in tannery sludge, as well as the salinity in tannery wastewater.
