SWOT analyse is determined key internal and external questions/factors (internal and external context of the organisation (In other words LOOK AT WELL AROUND YOU) which is considered very importnat in achievement scheduled organisation's objectives.
I agree upon the importance of SWOT. The difficulty in getting a good SWOT content comes from the fact that Strengths and Weaknesses can be formulated based on objective internal business environment analysis, while Opportunities and Threats are based on subjective evaluations.
SWOT is a powerful if used correctly and systematically, if not it is just "banging of heads together" as people beliefs that it is a "brainstorming" methodology. Basically the SW needs inputs from other models for in-depth analysis to determine what constitutes strengths or weakness, and these models can range from the capabilities models, resource based models, etc...and for external analysis of the OT, there are the 5/6/8 forces model, industry model, market analysis models, etc etc... these will come up with a lot of SW & OTs, so the subjectivity of selecting those with biggest impact can be objectively be reduced in terms of its opportunity for occurrence and impact or the so called Ansoff Model...all in all will make it a very powerful internal & external analysis model...if used correctly...and NOT just brain-banging
I agree...its very important but I do believe that this tool is not used correctly...even for me its difficult to correlate the 4 squares of the matrix.
I appreciate if someone can send me specific links to help correlate them.
I don´t know if you are asking or you are making a statement. Anyway, Swot is rather old (sixties) and is one of the first methods of strategic analysis, there are others. I think that Swot has one important benefit and it is that is quite easy to understand, however, it is not that easy to make. If you are planning to use it, first try to limit your analysis because if not you´ll end with something huge and not usefull at all.
A SWOT analysis is only as good as the understanding of the fundamental objectives upon which it is based. I would focus first on defining objectives, and measures for these objectives.
Swot analysis is strategic, so it is not something to do every week!. Usually it is said that strategic plans and tasks are a matter of years if you are talking of a classic business. If you are talking about ICTs and the like, probably that would not be the case and you should either adapt the tool or use another one.
An example, Porter said in one of his first books, that his 5 forces model analysis should be done every 3 years, he said that in the eighties and for classical business.
All said and done if you underplay your weaknesses, overplay your strengths and overlook your threats your are bound to fail. If you want to be successful with SWOT do a fairly accurate analysis. Your decisions will not be very much off the bulls eye.
Well done Tabitha Durai If the institutions of the state were facing the SWOC analysis, but I did not mean the question of state institutions, but the business organizations meant that it is a private sector facing SWOT
My contribution is about the second 2 letters: OT. in order to do this, one should be knowledgeable about “risk managent”. the first step in risk management is “identification of risks”, which is basically OT.
whoever is doing the SWOT analysis should also be knowledgeable about “risk response strategies“
SWOT becomes a practice tools of strategic analysis because this tool implemented based on qualitative or quantitative approach. Its means, we would use by experience and expertise in term of qualitative approach or by full questionnaires (internal factors: Strengths and Weaknesses; and external factors: Opportunities and Threats) with correspond some resource persons and also selected respondent with sampling technique (probability or non-probability methods). In term of decision making, it’s very important to know a comparison between a positive grid (Strengths and Opportunities) or positive scenario and a negative grid (Weaknesses and Threats) or negative scenario to find a contrast strategy for sustaining the organization competitiveness.@Hashim
Yes Indeed. SWOT analysis is one of the most widely used and relatively simple strategic tool that can help in making decisions. What makes the tools so special is the following characteristics-
1. It involves looking internal matters i.e. resource and competence.
2. It has a futuristic approach of looking opportunities and potential threats to watch out for.
3. It allows you to analyze your existing capabilities with the changing environment.
However, SWOT alone is not sufficient for taking any strategic decisions. You need other tools such as PESTEL, Forecasting, BCG, Porter's 5-Force to back the SWOT to have a holistic view.
**SWOT is useful when you are able to-
1- SO- Use your strengths to capitalize opportunities.
2.- ST- Build competence to overcome threat.
3- WO- Let you understand your shortcomings and ensure its minimization so that it won't be the roadblock on your success path.
4- WT- Foresee the threats at the earliest so that it won't expose your weakness.
SWOT analysis for now is the best for decision making, for fact that it takes into consideration the four words strength opportunities weaknesses and threats in it's analysis. That is the best that can be applied in decision making.
You are right that Swot analysis is a good tool for decision making, however to say it is "the best" is arguable, since it dates from the sixties and strategy has done a lot of miles since those days. Undoubtedly it is a good way of analysing a company in a moment, it is good because it is simple and rather quick. However, it can be tricky to say if something is good or bad (strength or weakness for instance) because generally things are both at the same time. For instance I am almost 59, that is a weakness since I can´t play football (soccer) but it is a strength since I can play with my grandchildren.
When you need a broad analysis of your business, department, organizational or team potential, you should look no further than the SWOT analysis. It can provide a good overview of all of the major points that add up to potential success and help you draft a road map for potential growth.
