Dear researchers,
I'm having some difficulties in justifying my research design in my master thesis. I really need your advices. Thank you in advance.
I started a project by using case study research methodology by Yin (2016), multiple case study. Along the way, several cases cannot be formed as there is only 1 interview from each company. So I switch to do just a general qualitative analysis in my research, not following the case study style anymore.
I read the "Qualitative Research from Start to Finish" by Yin when I switched to "general" qualitative analysis. Even though I do not see any conflict ideas when we do a switch. But I need some justification. Has anyone experienced the same thing? or know of some research that they do a hybrid design between a fixed "case study methodology" and a general qualitative approach?

Hi Long,
Look back at your objectives. Does the purpose to understand how people make sense of their lives of their lives and experiences? If yes, it is most likely a basic qualitative study. But case study has additional dimension such as a bounded system (a case, a person, a program etc).
If it is difficult for you to get an access to the companies, you may use basic qualitative inquiry as the research design. Because 1 interview from each company might not give you a rich information and quite difficult in a case study research.

I am not sure if one will be in a position to suggest something unless one does not have any idea about your topic (more specifically your problem statement), research questions, and research objectives as your design is dictated by these three.
Could you possibly explain why can there be "only 1 interview from each company"?
What is a general qualitative approach? Do you mean a qualitative descriptive design? You also mentioned a general qualitative analysis. I think you are having and issue understanding methodology, design and your analysis. At this point you should not be focusing on your analysis until you have gotten your chosen methodology and design correct. Since you decided to change your study from CS, do you need help understanding what other design you can use? What study was done that there was only 1 interview conducted?
Mohd Aliff Abdul Majid : thanks for your answer. Yeah, I consulted the book Qualitative Research from Start to Finish by Yin (2016, pp. 66-67) he said that it's pretty okay to do a generalized qualitative research. So it's pretty in line with what you suggested. Thanks!
