Several factors can influence the awareness of farmers regarding sustainable agriculture, notably favorable (in the economic sense) agricultural policies by governments; television and radio programs about issues of sustainability, education of children who, in turn, influence their parents. The outcome of such programs can be observed on a medium to long term period.
I believe no one can bring more awareness to a farmer than other farmer using sustainable management practices. And as a good reference supporting it, I suggest: "Campesino a Campesino: Voices from Latin America's Farmer to Farmer Movement for Sustainable Agriculture" . Book by Eric Holt-Gimenez .
Sustainable agriculture aims at restoring the connections between the environment, its resources and food production/agriculture. The gigantic agro-industrial complex that has been proposed and enacted for several decades by the industrialized world is too demanding of resources that have to be acquired from outside, whereas SA designs and maintains effective production by relying on resources that are already in place and available, at the farm. Observation, education and more simply the realization that the model of production proposed by the agroindustry is scarcely regenerative can be points of reflections aiding farmers to lean more towards SA. Economic factors play also a very tangible and pragmatic role in this narrative especially when the costs of production require massive loans of money by farmers for which there may be no returns and harsh consequences, such as loss of the family farm.
Govt cannot supply smart gadgets because it is a costly affair epecially in developing nations but it can give you apps working through these smart gadgets (smart phones etc) ,so that one can take a latest update on crop issues.
Our university has come up with one such app, which is available on play store and free for every one.It carries each and every information on crop rearing aspects.Have alook on forwarded linl please
Information Communication Technology for Extension: A Mobile Phone Based Voice Call System for Dissemination of Cotton Production Technologies
ABSTRACT
Dissemination of newer crop production technologies among growers is the major bottleneck in the existing extension system. This study proposes an innovative method for dissemination of cotton cultivation technologies through mobile phones. The voice advisories on different aspects of cotton cultivation were sent to mobile phones of growers, as and when required in the field. Feedback from growers revealed it as a highly acceptable extension technique, which helped them to make crucial time-specific decisions for crop management. The system has the potential to reach and benefit each and every grower at a very low cost compared to conventional training and visit extension system.
My current research project is also on the subject of awareness. It is good that this question addresses the BIG question of my research. I hope the input comments to this question will add knowledge to my research too. Thank you for raising this question.
They are telling us that they are making sustainable agriculture. Is it really? Is the fair price paid? Have the crops been stopped? The carbon footprint? I think it's only partly sustainable.
The question, "What influences awareness of farmers on Sustainable agriculture?", needs to be answered by exploring 'how the farmers distinguish between sustainable agriculture and unsustainable agriculture?'. This further needs elaboration as regards the varied agro-climatic conditions that create an environmental setting for a particular system of agriculture practice. I consider that more knowledge (both traditional and modern) about agriculture based on lived experience of the farmers contributes a lot towards his/ her awareness about a particular system/ practice of agriculture. Higher the extent of the lived experience, greater will be the awareness about the sustainability (or lack of it) of agriculture. What we mean by 'sustainability of agriculture' is also a lauded question that need more and more deeper understanding in terms of the historical as well as contextual aspects of the lived experiential learnings of the farmers.
An example encouraging farmers to forward crop residues to beneficial industries, instead of just burning them. This is illustrated in the below mentioned review. Happy new year.
