EC Wick (JACS,215, 2, 193-200) states that "Adherence to well-known infection control measures has not been associated with substantial reductions in SSI". I personally agree. What's your opinion, suggestions and comments? What about your procedures for an improvement of this aspect of surgical care? Think about wound infection in colon resections, where despite adequate chemoprophylaxis site infection is still an issue.
SSI term is used for surgical site infection that may be either superficial or deep. Despite all prophylactic measures and adequate antibiotic coverage , it is still a challenge when dirty or contaminated surgical procedures are performed. Most commonly secondary peritonitis cases leads to SSI in almost 25-40 % cases, a troublesome figure still today. Morbidity is quite high with prolonged hospitalization and increased cost. Multiple surgical interventions may be required leading to burden on resources.
