I did somethin similar as Anthony suggests but with electrochemical glass cells. Typically, it costs up to 3.000 EUR, but I found a glass technican which does the electrochemical cells for less than 100 EUR :-)

ofr EIS do not hesitate to buy Autolab, if yur benefits are limited then i prefer Gamry, or you can look Ivium technologies.

I do not know about multiple usage. but Autolab is better and is also costlier, you can also go for CH-instruments (less cost)

Autolab has outstanding potentiostats, but these are expensive.

I have purchased Potentiostat Atlas 0531 from Atlas-Sollich company with Impedance analyser for less than 15k EUR with electrochemical cells, electrodes, PC, programmes etc. It is a five electrode system, so You can get rid of the ohmic resistance on the wires.

Try out Bio-Logic, France. They are normally cheaper than Autolab, have module-like construction. So, you can start with simple single station, and then add EIS, current/voltage booster, or multiple stations to do several experiments on one device. I have no complaints about the quality (using it for several years); the software is indeed user-freindly: even the students with no experience in electrochemistry are using it after 10 minutes of introduction.

If you plan to make EIS on high impedance systems (like organic coatings), be careful about the high impedance limit of the machine. I have a good opinion on both Gamry and Autolab.

I have been using Gamry and the hardware is good. The software is probably not as good as some of its competitors but overall for cost its worth it.

I usually use a potentiostat/galvanostat (EG&G, 273A) and a frequency response analyzer (EG&G 1025) for electrochemical and impedance applications.

This is my experience of 25 years ago. Electronic components (opamps, AD/DA converters) had become cheap. Learn about electronics - it is not that difficult! - and built potentiostats yourself. Then you can run several exps simultaneously. You may have to approach people (electronic technicians) from other depts. These people are often busy, but in general have a few secs to spare. If they cannot help you, they may refer you to people that can, as they have their own networks. Ask for advice when things do not work out. (I personally like to chat with electronic technicians because of their refreshing lack of pretense - of which there otherwise is so much at the U - and their confidence in what they are doing). Building your own also helps in a better understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of commercially available potentiostats.

Be however careful when manually handling potentiostats: when your potentiostat tries to maintain a potential difference between your left and right hand, the evoked current goes through your heart as well!

The corrosion currents that I measured were often very low, in the 1- 10 nA/cm2 range.

I forgot to mention that I eventually used a scheme for a potentiostat that was applied in an electrochemical HPLC detector.

Measuring the OCP was also not trivial, I had to make use of a special HP voltmeter suited for high impedance measurements.

I would recommend Bio-Logic. Really nice, price also reasonable.

I would suggest the ArrayPGstat from NuVant Systems Inc.  It comes in modules of 5 channel boards and is relatively low cost.

Any thoughts about Pine Wavedriver, BASI EC Epsilon, Bio-logic SP-200, Gamry 1000E?

Biologic is a little cheaper than metrohm. I find that Gamry is even more lesser price. I do not know about the performance and software. I'm also happy to hear the experience with Gamry, Metrohm and Biologic. Please do share the experience.

NuVant has the EZstat Pro. This unit has active IR compensation and does EIS from 0.01 - 10 kHz. It has a 40 pA resolution with current ranges up to 1 amp. The price is less than $8K. Check out:

I do not recommend to build you own potentiostat. The workload is often underestimated. Making a software, a firmware on top of making the potentiostat will consume a lot of time. The result is a one-trick-pony that consumed many hours of your time. If you include the man hours in the costs of your potentiostat, it is economical suicide to not buy a potentiostat from the shelf. Think what you could have done instead with these hours to get your research done?

The only reason to build a potentiostat yourself is to learn how to build a potentiostat.

To be transparent I work for PalmSens and we are selling end-user as well as OEM potentiostats. So I have contact with many customers developing electrochemical products. They waste time with developing their own potentiostat instead of working with an OEM potentiostat and go to market a lot quicker and have actual income to invest in the further development of the product. So they come back to us after 6 months to get an OEM potentiostat being very frustrated about trying to make something that is already available.

Our potentiostats start with 500 € for an OEM potentiostat including EIS (EmStat Pico) capability. End Users can get our Sensit Smart for less than 800 € with is also capable of EIS. There are of course also more expensive models, if you want multi-channels etc., but also these have very economical prices..

Building your own potentiostat in 2020 is totally irrational.

There are so many good and inexpensive instruments nowadays.
