Suffocation, including hanging, is an increasingly common method of suicide among children and young adults in the U.S., according to a CDC analysis in MMWR.

Researchers analyzed national mortality data for young people aged 10 through 24 years from 1994 through 2012. Firearm was the most common method of suicide among males throughout the period, while suffocation was the most common method among females starting in 2001. Firearm deaths generally decreased throughout the period, while suffocation suicides increased (by 7% and 2% per year among females and males, respectively).

The authors cite a national survey in which 17% of high school students reported "seriously considering suicide" and 8% reported attempting suicide in the previous year.
