I'm preparing a column about the options for restoring habitats or re-mountaintop land after strip-mining operations cease. Congress is considering legislation (the RECLAIM Act) that would, in effect, provide funding to clean up the destruction done by mining companies. Because states are effectively granting permission to for-profit companies to do little or nothing to repair the damage they do, locals are left to deal with the consequences.

The included report talks about proposed reclamation activities, but I'd like to talk with scientists who have been part of or studied a successful MTR restoration.

Thank you,

Margo
