I am currently scanning a single crystalline 2D material and I keep getting some distortion near the edge (on the left for the forward scan; on the right for the backward scan). Even when I have an atomic resolution image this effect is still there, causing lower image quality. Is there some some way of getting rid of this problem?
In the acute phase you could get rid of the flake by electrostatics, i.e. giving a strong bias to the tip; if you're lucky, that throws it off. If not: bad luck.
In general: try to find acceptable scan settings with a higher tip-surface distance, e.g. by reducing the tunneling current threshold. This may occasionally lead to a loss of the contact and you will have to reapproach, but at least your tip will remain intact.
