I carried out the reaction using EDC/DMAP in DCM obtaining great results. EDC is cleaner than DCC (to purify). I did not need to add any additive.

Hi Daniel,

to the best of my knowledge, in principle, the conditions you would like to apply didn't request any other additive. BUT, very often it is suggested to employ also some ester activating agents (HOAt, HOBT, pentafluorophenol, etc.) when you want to synthesize an ester. EDC or DDC or DIC were employed for the activated ester formation, then with DMAP (cat) you promote the ester formation with your R'OH.

I recently made two esters via microwave chemistry.

a. Heating Glycerin with Lauric acid and 0.3% ZnCl2. The product is Glycerol Mono Laurate. It has a faint smell of buttered popcorn.

b. Glycerin and Citric acid nothing else. the product is a biodegradable polyester.

I just thought these were interesting esterification reaction.

Dear Daniel,

Did you use EDC as its hydrochloride? if yes, how many equivalents of DMAP (I

suppose that DMAP would then play a dual role) did you use?

EDCI can be a good choice, with 2 equivalent of EDCI, 1 equivalent of DMAP, 3 times of TEA and many DCM, in room temperature for 24-48 hours, then heat to reflux for 5-8 hours.

EDCI AND DMAP IS BEST CHOICE.

i use EDC couplingcagent and DMAP as catalyst for ester formation and the urea bi product is water soluble .

EDC.HCl(1.0 eq) was added to a mixture of acid (1.0 mole), and dichloromethane which was pre cooled to 0-5oC and stirred for 30 mins, followed by addition of alcohol( 1.0 eq) and DMAP(1.0 eq) into the reaction mass, then the reaction mass temperature slowly raised to room temperature, stirred for 1.5 hr. added 5-7 % citric acid solution into reaction mass. Separated the bottom organic layer and aqueous layer extracted with DCM. Combined the both organic layers and dried over sodium sulphate. Concentrated the organic layer under reduced pressure and purified the compounds by column chromatography ( 10% Acetone: Cyclohexane mixture) .
