Being a part of this subject your question is really interests me and most importantly while answering this question I don't need to be formal.

I appreciate the above given answers but I would like to explain Statistics in my own language. I know that you know what is statistics's definition and all that but now the question is that how to visualize its application in daily life.

*It might sound little childish but when our mother cooks in kitchen she takes little amount of the prepared dish and then judge it that whether its taste is up to the mark or not, in statistical language we call it as sampling.

*Now come to little higher level when a recruitment is to be done what one does. he simply plans an interview, calls all the interested candidates, he himself prepares a questionnaire (Schedule), interviews the person one by one and after that on the basis of the information collected from the participants he decides whether the person is to be selected or not, this is what called statistical inference in statistics.

Now come to the professional aspect this is the subject which is widely used in all the streams.

It is obvious that statistics is very important and we use it a lot in our daily life as routine but I think that statistics is not used in scientific way in different organs such as companies, offices, industries, ....

For example in my country statistics is used in researches scientifically and just researchers aware of the worth of this science. It is interesting for me to know how to use statistics in other countries.

You might not have heard but that there is a lot of application of statistics in companies, industries etc.. I will start with Industries.

Role of Statistics in Industries: Statistical Quality control is widely used while manufacturing and marketing goods. There are some popular terms like process control, product control, Control Charts , Acceptance- Rejection or Acceptance-Rectifying Sampling plans and Sequential Sampling Plans. Process control is concerned with how to control no. of defectives produced in a manufacturing process and how to distribute the defectives among all the lots uniformly is called product control. Other terms also need some introduction but that would be too lengthy if you would be interesting then I will send you some references.

So I don't think there would be hardly any industry which will not be using these scientific techniques because they are really fruitful.

Reliability theory is also widely used in industries like finding out the average life time of electrical components, reliability of a component and a system of components etc.

Operational Research is one of the branch of statistics which is being appreciated for its role in industries, offices, defence etc.. inventory control is also used in industries that how to store and distribute the manufactured goods efficiently.

Role of Statistics in Office: I may not be able to explain this one. Many offices work with statistical modelling. They take data, model them by using appropriate model and come up with conclusions that what kind of modification is needed for that particular problem. Apart these Queuing theory is also used widely.

Now a days we know that share market has become very popular and everybody is looking forward to invest there and make profits as much as they can.

There is a branch of statistics which deals with share market and option pricing so called Stochastic processes.

There is still a lot to say but now I would like to imphasize that now a days whether its a developing country or a developed country they are using these statistical techniques widely and getting favourable results as well. So if your country's people are not aware of all these things then they are really missing very good opportunities for the efficient use of available resources. I can not say that in which way you could contribute but you should do something and you can.Because the moral behind of all these stories is

"To opt Law of optimization which leads to sustainable development " .
