i read this part here from a research paper,
''If the mean percentages of inclusion between two experiments are distinct enough so that the standard deviations do not overlap, these values can be deemed different"
when the author states standard deviations do not overlap, does it mean mean +/- SD or mean +/- (1.96 SD) ??
To my mind they use the wrong terminology. I think they probably mean interval of confidence which is linked to a level of significance.
I agree with Charles Berg that it sounds wrong, and that the authors may have confused standard deviation with standard-error/confidence-intervals (i.e., in which case they are describing the logic of a t-test)
Based on the book "A Primer of Ecological Statistics" by Gotelli and Ellison (2004), sd is for comparing sample means whereas se is for comparing population means. ANOVA will decide whether two means are significantly different or not as Luis Perez suggested. However, what bars should we use when making a figure?
