I am trying to run an analysis of a .trj file generated from a Roundabout simulation in Vissim and the SSAM software is hanging out before completing the task. The file is about 100 MB.
Does anybody know what it takes to perform such analysis?
PC configuration:
* Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4590 CPU @ 3.30GHz, 3301 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)
* Installed Physical Memory (RAM): 16.0 GB
From the size of your data file, the problem does not appear to be very big. A way to answer your question is: run your analysis on your pc first. If it takes more than a reasonable length of time (1 day), then you should consider multiprocessor parallelisation. If you are limited to use of the software you mentioned, using supercomputer needs for the software to have to ability to use the supercomputer. You can of course run many instances without the software needing to be parallel.

Hi Sanjay! Thanks for your message. Actually, the software runs for only a couple of minutes before hanging and closing without completing the analysis. I was wondering if it would be the case to "make" the software take it slowly to see if it can finish the analysis, as I've seen in some researchers reporting SSAM ran for a few hours before giving results. However, I don't know how to go about this as well.

If the source is open, try to compile with the debug flags. Then run the version of your simulation that hangs and closes. This may or may not produce a core file that you can debug to find out where it is hanging and closing unexpectedly. One source of error is how you give the software its data, and how much error handling it can do.
In case the same version of the program has been used by others, and they found that an analysis is finished after a few hours, then more investigation may be needed. Assuming above suggestion worked, then first thing to find is whether the program is capable of using multiple processors, or is co-processor enabled. Any local computer with more than 1 CPU will let you test it. A HPC service is useful only when your codes/software can use multiple processors, can use GPUs, or better, are CPU-GPU enabled. Otherwise, there is no reason to need a supercomputer.
