Note. I've tried single, double, and triple quotes for the STRING VALUE, as well as with and without quotes for the NUMERIC VALUE and re-run the code. All outputs came up with the same error.

To recode one or more string variables into a corresponding set of numeric variables, use:

RECODE X1 X2 X3...Xn('STRING VALUE XXX' = 1)...('STRING VALUE ZZZ' = 10)into X1_New X2_New X3_New...Xn_New.

So the strings on the left are between single (or double) quotes, but the numbers on the right are completely without quotes. It is not possible, in SPSS, to use strings on the left and 'real' numbers on the right on the same variables; it is obligatory, then, to use the 'into' convention.

Or is this the case. Although your string variables are somehow defined as string, in reality they actually contain numbers. For that 'situation', SPSS has created the simple and powerful command:

alter type X1 X2 X3...Xn(f).

This wil change the string-character of your existing variables into numeric (so without having to create 'n' new variables), while at the same time conserving all numeric values. So string '12345' becomes number 12345. If any case has text in its value, say a respondent said 'Between 5 and 7', then 'alter type' will not interpret this as '6', but 'alter type' will then return a system missing value (for that case only). To resolve this latter problem, you might use a recode just before the 'alter type', for instance:

RECODE X1 X2 X3...Xn('Between 5 and 7' = '6')...('About 9' = '9').

Notice that in this latter case, '6' as well as '9' do carry a quote, as at this 'stage', they are strings, and are not numbers, as yet. The following 'alter type'-command then will turn strings '6' and '9' automatically into numbers 6 and 9.

When recoding more than one string variable on the same recode, make sure that all the string variables on that same recode have the same 'Width'. Recoding a 4-character variable and a 6-character variable on the same recode results in a 'warning'. If that is the case, then split the recode in one separate recode for each string-variable. Notice that unlike 'recode', 'alter type' has no problem with handling string-variables of different length on the same command.

Also check if all of the variables X1 X2 X3...Xn are indeed string-variables (for instance by going through them in the data-window, tab 'Variable View', column 'Type'; string-variables are designated with keyword 'String', and numeric variables are designated with 'Numeric'. The 'length' of string-variables in particular is given in the column 'Width'). If only one of them accidentally happens to be a numeric variable, an error will result. This may easily occur, when using the 'var1 to var100' convention, to quickly refer to many variables simultaneously. Then it might get unnoticed that say variable 'var50' happens to be numeric (already), and an error is the result. Within the same recode, alle variables must be of the same 'Type'.
