I am encountering a bit of an issue in SPSS right now. I was recoding some variables in my dataset, after which I made a mistake in the calculations. I tried to reverse it by pressing CTRL+Z. That did not work, but eventually, I calculated the variable again. However, now I see that in my whole dataset, all the string variables, are showing symbols such as '@' in the cell instead of normal text (example in the picture below). Did I do something wrong and how can I fix it?
Delete the wrong answers and replace with the correct ones. Find and replace in Excel is one way to get the job done. There are many other choices in replacement of bad data entries. With confidence in your ability to do this , David Booth

I can empathize.
This is one of those many instances in which the lesson, "save (your file) often," becomes remarkably salient after the fact. In SPSS, always recode variables into new variables (not replacing the current variable). That will allow you to proceed when a transformation goes awry.
But, for your current situation, I don't know any way to undo a transform in SPSS wherein the original variable has been replaced and you're unsure what actually happened to the original values. The best you can hope for is that David Eugene Booth 's suggestion that some uniform change occurred (e.g., all instances of "hog_jowls" were changed to "@@").
