If I were to build a spin coater for coating organic solar cells, what are the desirable specifications with regard to speeds and acceleration values for obtaining good coatings?

If you where building your own instrument then try to make it progaramable type instrument with probably 3 steps program.
1) Acceleration from 0-500 rpm about 10 second
2) keep the 500 rpm for next 10-15 second so solution on substrate get spread uniformly.
3) Acc from 500-3000 in next 10 second.
4) 3000 rpm for next 15-20 second for dring
5) then for 0 as per your conviniance.
try parameter is very important in the organic material for their phase seperation. You can refer our paper on the same.

In step 3 , when the spin coater is accelerated for a second time, what is the need for such acceleration? Would it not cause non-uniform film thickness? Could you please elaborate?
In step 3 accn is to increase the rpm linearly sudden increase in rpm may cause more material loss from the substrate which may ulimatly reduce the film thickness and introduce non uniformity in the film here we increasing the rpm for drying the film which is an important step in spin coating process.
