I read in some articles that if the speed of homogenization (eg. ultraturrax) is higher then the nanoparticle size is smaller. But I did some experiments and I got the opposite result: If I increased the speed of ultraturrax, the nanoparticles got a higher size, and the polidispersity index is low (between 0.2 and 0.4). Does anyone have some explanation about it?
Well i guess if we start initially at a higher speed onlya few particles which come in contact with the ultraturrax wil break up with great force pushing the rest of the particles aside and will take a lot of time for all the particles to break ,but if v start at a lower speed n thnincrease the speed there will b uniformity in the rate of the particles coming in contact with the ultraturrax n scattering and effect on the other particles will be reduced.hence u can get better results with the polidispersity .
May be the problem is that you are obtaining low rate of nucleation process, so there are few nuclei in your system and the growth process begins. If the only difference in your experiments is the speed of ultraturrax, there is a posibility that another variable is more important for the size of the nanoparticles. I think that may be is the addition velocity of your reducing agent (or oxidating, it depends of your case). By controling the addition you can affect the size, with low velocities you can obtain smaller particles.
Kaiwalyay -->So, the problems is that, maybe when I increased the speed, the nanoparticles formed, they colapsed between then, and so this is why the bigger size??, thank you for the answers ;)
German Vidal --> Hola Germán, estoy sintetizando nanoparticulas poliméricas, lo único que he variado hasta el momento ha sido la velocidad del ultraturrax, y obtuve ése resultado que comenté anteriormente y quedé como condorito ( ¡ PLOP ¡ ) Otra posibilidad que estoy pensando es que al aumentar la velocidad, la temperatura del sistema aumenta por la fricción que ocurre en el proceso de homogenización, y mi polímero a temperaturas mayores a 50 o 30°C empieza a degradarse.. :'( mal por mí :S
como condorito jajjaja... Si tu polímero, se degrada a 30°C parece que ahí esta tu problema, suponiendo que todo tu sistema de reacción no se aleja mucho de la temperatura ambiente, tal vez tengas una diferencia de temperatura local que te este afectando y permita cierta degradación pero no total. Inclusive si la temperatura es apenas debajo de esa temperatura, tal vez cuando tus partículas poliméricas chocan entre sí, sufran de coalescencia y crezcan por la gran fuerza con que chocan. Pero faltaría alguna caracterización para saber si obtienes el material que buscas y si no, pues entonces si se están degradando. Si confirmas que tu problema es ese, quedan 2 opciones: 1.- Si el tamaño y morfología que obtuviste antes de aumentar la velocidad del ultraturrax es satisfactorio, pues con eso, 2.- Puedes agregar a tu diseño del experimento un baño que te permita mantener el sistema a temperatura ambiente o inferior a esta si es que tu material lo permite.
ps creo q me voy por la opción 2.. incluirle un baño de hielo.. o dejarlas a la minima velocidad para tenerlas pequeñas.. porq .. para hacer SEM.. (ejem) un tanto costoso :P
En mi investigación (with ultraturaxt), la temperatura se mantiene por el hielo en el tubo de almacenamiento (como camisa de refrigeración doble). por lo que la temperatura se mantiene fría y no daña el material deseado. (terjemah google)
