Good topic, the average number of post doc and PhD student for most PI are 10, so you can expect at least one paper per each individual, that mean 10 papers and if you also were collaborating with other labs and your technicians execute some experiments you do than there is chance to elevate the number in to 20 paper each year and you still produce good science, but I can not imagine that any one can produce 50 or more, this is impossible.

A agree with Ahmed. Unless an academic is in a position to solely research and publish - most other academics have to be 'realistic' about what is achievable - and desirable. I am considered, in my field, to be quite a prolific publisher - but the most I could ever manage is between 5-10 publications per year. Sometimes - it's quite a bit less. It just depends on cycles. If I aimed for any more than that - I would not get anything else done - and I'm sure that the quality of my publications would suffer. To me - publication should not be about setting rigid 'targets'. I prefer the philosophy of 'quality over quantity' every time.
Dean Whitehead you are very right. 70 publications! that's huge. Teaching the number of courses that I do at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels..... I know my limits. With high number of postgraduate students and collaborations, well, it could be possible, if an only if one is solely involved in research. It is difficult to imagine such number of publications from one who is lecturing and involved in university administrative duties and community development.

The author stated that this issue of research could be published in a number of fields, but it is difficult to apply in the academic field, as Maurice Ekpenyong explained.
Seventy papers published a year, means around two every ten days! That sounds not logic!
This means no experiments
conducted, may be just doing the write up only! But again, time will not be enough for writing, submitting& accepting a paper.
So, if some people are publishing in this density, may be indicating that probably a strong man/ woman in a power position (like a head of department,..... etc) is forcing other researchers for co- authorship!
