Is there any simple way to calculate soil subgrade modulus. For example, if the soil test is not conducted and soil SBC is assumed as 150KN/sq.m. in order to design isolated and combined footing in SAFE how can we calculate subgrade modulus.
Subgrade reaction modulus (k) can be directly determined through performing the in-situ plate-loading test, also it can be approximately computed using several empirical relationships proposed by several researchers. The most commonly expression used for predicting subgrade reaction modulus is given as:
k= [(Es/E)^(1/3)]*[Es/ (1-μs^2)h]
where:
Es and μs are the elastic modulus and the Poisson’s ratio of the subgrade, respectively.
E and h are the elastic modulus and the thickness of the footing, respectively.
