Now days with EC2, we don't need to install a virtual server image anymore. to make a HTTP server, we don't need to install a Linux OS then Apache server on it. the server start to be a simple applications in a container. AMAZON don't show deep information about the system structure.
is the container contain an embedded OS inside to be an environment for the application ? what is the base environment that the virtual application work in?
Container engine helps setup processes in an isolated manner. The application runs inside the OS and and the container engine doesn't sit between the app and OS at all. In other words, A container engine does no virtualization and it's not a hypervisor. A containerized application is one of the app/bin/lib stacks in the figure which they all use the same OS. In the container-based architecture, If there are kernel faults in the OS, all of the containers will be affected directly because they share the same kernel. On the other hand, in the hypervisor architecture, if there are kernel faults in one of the guest OS's, only the applications running on top of that faulty guest OS will be affected.

The figure that you shared is about the difference between hypervisor type 1 and 2 or bare metal. However, things now passed this from long time. You can check the EC2 fundamental for better view.
