Now I am preparing for PhD study. I marked some subjects, but I found them deep theoretically. I aim to get a practical and modern subject. I mean that the subject must be a real and practical network issue that faced the engineers in the practical life today. this properties will allow me to get a practical experience rather than theoretical. for that I need an engineer with a good experience to suggest subjects with these properties.
I marked two subjects " Internet of Things and SDN ". I will be happy if you give me your opinions about these subjects and the points of them that valid to be a study case for PhD subject. if you have another subjects you suggest.

To start, fundamentally a PhD is a theoretical piece of work, hence thesis. Although, the thesis can be designed to address a "practical" problem. In fact, there are many "practical" problems that can be addressed in IoT as well as SDN. For instance, the idea that IoT bridges security threats from the "cyber" space to the "physical" space. Overall, you will start with a broad subject area for your PhD, of this I have no doubt. Over time the scope of your work and the address of your research problem will narrow. However, if I were to provide some advice on your approach for a good PhD subject then the following points are important to consider going forward:
Choose a subject that has seen less investment and research; this gives you more room to make unique contributions and become a subject matter expert
Play on your existing skills e.g. pick a subject that compliments existing knowledge an experience
Be prepared to learn new subjects to facilitate your PhD goal, e.g. statistics, programming languages etc.
Most importantly, pick a subject you feel passionate about. A PhD is a journey of Ups and Downs and therefore your enthusiasm and dedication to completing the PhD must be driven by more than just an arbitrary subject matter.
