Skill and Knowledge are complementary to each other. I strongly feel knowledgeable individual should have proper skill set to translate their knowledge into the actions to achieve some goal. Hence, both are important. However, only skill is not sufficient for doing anything; without proper knowledge it will become mechanical activity, not suitable for high end work!

I sincerely believe they will quite shortly. With MOOC courses and the overall development of connectivism, there are visions that higher education will shrink into some learning kompetence trivium and the rest will be covered by specialised courses. It makes sense, doesn't it?

Interesting question and replies. I think over the years, in many countries we have seen these two paradigms being merged.

Studies that would once been considered as skills (technical, practical, apprenticeships) are now becoming university courses.

Both skill and higher education are two forms of education. Education can be considered to be formal in comparison to skill. Skill model is a skill somehow based on practical skills and is helpful when education can not be continued whatever the reason is.

This question is very complex and very dependent on the person. Often higher education gives only conceit and a sense of significance to a person, but is not realized in practical actions. In Russia, there are people who have not received a higher education, or who received it after the start of their studies in science. So famous Ya.B. The job market confers the status that higher education titles currently hold. Different types of skills can be attained in post-secondary education. Research skills are mostly taught at universities while technical skills are usually pursued at vocational schools. According to the job market signaling model (Spence, 1973), employers have difficulties when predicting the productive capabilities of a job applicant or a new employee. In order to avoid uncertainty, employers have decided to assess employees’ skills based on their observable characteristics. Years of education and post-secondary education degrees have become a major reputation component when applying for a job. Therefore, for technical skills to be more prominent than research skills, the job market needs to start rewarding those workers at a higher rate than that of a university educated employee.

I think no because skill cannot offer the invaluable interpersonal, critical thinking and analytical skills associated with what you gain from higher education studies. In addition, the employer is not just looking at skills for today, but want a workforce that can also meet future challenges. Also, ditching higher education is short sighted and will only produce a generation who have hardly any labour mobility.

I think, on the one hand, that higher education will never be replaced by skill universities, as people prefer higher education diploma in order to get a better job, career upgrade. It is more prestigious. No one knows the future .... Probably, the university will be more an institution for the one who does research or contributes to science, whereas skill university will be a chance to get a job or occupation but not conduct a research or getting a degree.

Not to replace, but to complement. It is ncessary in the 21st century. Spain raises it.
