How would an online Doctoral VIVA differ compared to a real-life face-to-face one? What were the positive experiences and negative experiences you have had as a student and would like to share with others? As examiners, what would be your advice to the students?

There is a huge difference between both these methods. The online platform does not allow you to asses the personality and the confidence of the student while answering the questions and also we are not able to asses the behavior, dressing ,respect towards seniors and personal hygiene. Besides these online methods restrict our range of questions as we are not able to asses the core competencies of the student.

There are differences across continents. The viva voce, if done at all, is pro forma in most US schools; in many other parts of the world, the viva voce is a critical process. This situation was not always the case in the US, as twenty plus years ago, the viva could be antagonistic. Still, having platforms which make multiple speakers talking in rapid fire difficult, the process is very slow.
