Date palm tissue cultures are susceptible to a vitrification phenomenon. This physiological disorder is characterized by the development of tissue with lignification deficiency. It is due to the accumulation of water in the cultured tissues. Many factors that enhance this disorder,the more important among them are high levels of growth regulators (mainly cytokinins) and some mineral salts (especially ammonium ions) in the culture medium.
