Performing experiments on species with low population sizes raises serious concern as many experiments or studies require sacrificing the organism. Scope of publication in scientific journals encourages scientist to conduct experiments involving these organisms. If journals refuse to publish results from experiments involving such organisms will it not discourage such experiments? Though not very accurate, but don't you thing experiments involving "proxy-species" should be encouraged more?
