In a class discussion, organisms that live in a harsh environment choose iteroparity so as to create another batch of young if the earlier does not survive, which was quite confusing. The bad conditions set on the population would lead to many of them dying at an early age, thus they would be forced to sexually mature earlier. Semelparity seemed to be the best choice since one would produce a lot of small young, so surely some will live, compared to if iteroparity is chosen wherein less energy is used (compared to semelparity) yet a smaller amount of young would be produced, surely all young would get killed before producing offspring. Also, another batch of young will surely not be possible since the parents would die before they could make one (surely).
