With most universities currently having online tuition, do you think students and parents should be paying the same tuition fees as with the face-to-face instruction?
I think it is, of course, they need it. The teachers need more effort to prepare learning materials, it takes much more time to evaluate students' work, and give then feedback for their works. We (as teachers(ó) work harder then it is normal circumstances.
Joshua, like Eva, I believe that the answer is yes - if the quality of delivery is maintained and the students end up with similar outcomes/results. Many institutions were already working hard to further promote and develop distance education models. Predictions by some are that, after Covid-19, many institutions may not go back to face-to-face delivery - or at least in disciplines where it is not essential. What we are winessing now may become the new 'normal'. In which case, the delivery will still be labour-intensive and incur similar costs to run.
Great question! Many petitions are going on questioning the logic of the "same" level of tuition fees.
Like other replies before me, I believe the same curriculum planning and delivery resources are still being employed. On top of this, Universities are expediently adapting to provide virtual learning spaces and continued support on student learning, so that existing students are able to progress on their academic plans. While I agree with Dean Whitehead that this exposes us to the 'new normal', many academics would hope that the same teaching will transit and return to face-to-face when the pandemic is over. Hence, the same enrolled students will be having lessons back to normal once social distancing measures are over.
Those were profound thoughts there. For many countries, especially those within developing economies, the current disruption reiterates our readiness for such drastic change. Besides, how can it be sustained if this becomes the new normal as you have said Dean Whitehead ?
Then are those that believe economies of scale should make online tuition cheaper since an instructor can teach even more than 1000 students using online platforms.
