The teaching of ethics is indeed important. It would be better if ethics will be taught as anchored in the University or Institution's VMG so the student gets the character that the institution wishes to form. Also, I think it would also help if ethics will be highly contextualized such that as the level of education progresses, the student also gains expertise in the discipline-- he or she also get ethically informed (and hopefully responsible).

I think that they should all definitely be taught, but whether they are part of a specific course, or embedded as a recurring theme throughout all aspects of training, should be considered. I think there may be more relevance and meaning for learners if they are woven into the course as a whole.

I agree with lain lawrie that teaching ethics is essential but it s better to be woven into the course

I think ethics should be taught throughout the entire course progressively as relevant to the subject. Ethics governs acceptable actions and so it would not be right not to teach it imho

Ethic is culture driven right from parenting and home grown. Doing Good or Bad is kind of reinforcement which when properly channelized gives the evolution of a better person/ employee / student / citizen. Civilized practices in a society paves way for good ethics; while poverty/ malnourished / deprived state of society proves Darwin theory of existence. Upto me, teaching ethics is of no use unless the fundamentals of the social setup where the inputs given is prepared well so that the contents are well received / perceived and accepted else this will create "SMART CRIME"

Ethics is critical at any level. Institutionally it is critical to establish behavioral boundaries. In my mind it is important to teach ethics in a way that also opens the mind and opens the window for rethinking and rewriting what is acceptable and what is not. It also needs to open the window to allow for difference in worldview as well as culture. It needs to be able to create an atmosphere in which all can see and affirm the natural creative process. When we do this we then engage in the process of co-creating new meaning and redefining the institution and its process.

Teaching of ethics makes the students aware of the ethical demands that come in any given instance and profession. The goal is to spur them to aim at acting with ethical consideration. In my experience though other societal factors contribute to having an ethical climate. My society glamorizes riches regardless of where one has acquired it. This encourages unethical behavior and students often ask why are we teaching ethics yet the country is acting in the opposite direction. We do have a curriculum that exposes the students to ethics.

Ethics, broadly understood, should indeed be taught at the UG and PG levels: as such an education is not merely technical, but also humanistic, a course on the enduring questions of ethical reasoning and critical thought is a must. Professional ethics, however, is another matter. For areas of study that are established professions (medicine, law, engineering, perhaps science), professional ethics courses are vital at both levels. For other fields, which might have a coherent identity but are not professions per se, a professional ethics course would be a poor fit. Perhaps something along the lines of a research ethics course or the like, in these cases, might be better.

Teaching of ethics becomes a series of moral lectures. Instead we have to try the maxim:

If they do not follow ethical methods in organization, profession, public life or family life, what is the end result and how catastrophic it is for them and the society must be brought to their notice through discussions, video pictures and case study analysis of real life anecdotes.

We try from philosophy of ethics, religious philosophies, social responsibility, corporate governance, legal framework, environmental protection etc., which end up as theoretical discourses.

May be I am wrong! But this is what I feel after teaching two years of Business Ethics for M.B.A. students.

In engineering UG programs, in general the professional ethics are part of curriculum.

It is important that students are made aware of acceptable norms in order to function well in a civilized society. Although it is a part of the undergraduate curriculum in most universities , ethics and integrity should be an indirect part of every course.
