I am a young scholar who is keen on two main things:
1. Gain more visibility and
2. Get access to opportunities through likeminded networks.
Based on the above two premises, kindly advise with reasons for and against either option. Thank you for your input.
I think an article published in a popular journal will usually be much more worthwhile for both your goals. But a book chapter could be better if the book topic is perfect for you and the editors and other chapter contributors are people you aspire to connect with. Don't forget book chapters will only be published once the entire book is complete (i.e. everyone else has finished their parts) so it could take long, while journal articles are published continuously.
A journal article is more visible than a book chapter. So, you better focus on a journal article.
I agree with Stephen: book chapters, however good, can sometimes get lost in the mass of today's publications whereas an article in a good journal is less likely to. But I don't agree that you should seek opportunities by cultivating networks, if you don't mind me saying. In my view, you should read as much as you can - including books that are not contemporary - think carefully and then write. What you say will gain in depth. Networks will emerge almost unanticipated, and not by careerist design.
Emmanuel Mwenje - Journal publication is the best. Choose the good quality journal as per the area of your study. Study some good quality papers and try to understand the essence of those papers and the standard of the write-ups. A paper published in a good quality journal with high impact factor is worth than dozens of research articles/chapters published in low quality journals/publishers. Papers published in good quality journals have more visibility and impact.
