I am preparing a report and want to use some figures from some papers, and wish to know if I have to take the permission of the author, the journal or the publisher before using it as it is. Some journals publish open access articles distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. Does this require a permission before the usage of figures?
See the Creative Commons tab above with similar questions that shed good light on the question. It appears from the discussion thread that there is some blurriness in the understanding of "unrestricted use".
