Nitrogen contamination of the surface water (lake, river and stream) is monitored routinely as nitrate-N, ammoniacal-N (both of the above combined as dissolved inorganic-N) and total-N. The above contaminants are trophic N-indices since they have the potential to cause algal growth.

There have been increasing reporting of dissolved organic-N (DON) leaching from farming soils with detectable DON levels found in surface water. It is also known that algae can utilize DON as a source of nutrient-N. If so, should routine water monitoring or research trials involving water-N monitoring include separate DON monitoring in addition to the usual N indices?
