I am a great believer in Open Source & sharing my knowledge. I think monetizing is a function of personal choice. 90% of what I do is gratis and pro-bono.
It's the "Sharing Economy" which enables individuals to monetize assets that are not being fully utilized. This has becoming popular due to the advent of the internet, pervasive computing and the ease of mobile payments (m-payments).
Yet Sharing an asset for money or not is a matter of personal choice as Emmanuel Vijayanand Murray said. Good example would be listing your accommodation space on either AirBnB (For Money) or Couchsurfing (For Free). As an intangible asset Knowledge Sharing in Massive Open Online Courses for a fee or totally free would be a great example.
